Pensions, benefits remain secure despite pandemic

Dear OP&F members,

I hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy.

I want to assure you that your pensions are safe and secure. Our widely diversified investment portfolio is structured to withstand many types of market conditions, including the financial turmoil caused by the pandemic. We expect that once this crisis has passed, the investment markets will recover in due time. Fortunately, last year was very favorable for our investments, which softens the effect of the negative returns so far in 2020.

Please be assured that we are able to pay all benefits on time and will continue to do so. There has been no disruption to our essential services and we are slowly returning to a more normal environment at our headquarters. Our dedicated staff and Board continue to process retirements, disability benefits, DROP entries and withdrawals, employer payroll reports and more during this emergency period.

Our phone lines remain open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. While we are not accepting in-person appointments at this time, we are scheduling pre-retirement meetings and these are taking place by phone. Though we will not be conducting large gatherings such as our pre-retirement seminars or health care meetings for the rest of 2020, OP&F will be adding opportunities for webinars and other virtual seminars for members that will be just as informative and helpful as they have been in the past. Look for further announcements regarding upcoming webinars for both major topics.

The last two months have been unprecedented in our lifetimes. While the pandemic has profoundly affected our lives, I am proud of our staff for responding to the challenge. Also, I continue to be in awe of our public safety forces who continue to be on the front lines protecting our lives and property.

With warm regards,

John Gallagher, Executive Director
