Tzagournis recognized for years of service as OP&F Medical Advisor

Columbus, Ohio – Dr. Manuel Tzagournis, a physician who serves as the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund (OP&F) Board of Trustees’ Medical Advisor for disability appeal hearings, was recognized July 27 for 40 years of service as OP&F Medical Advisor. State Representative John Carney of the 22 District presented resolutions recognizing Tzagournis’ work from both the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate.

“The OP&F Board of Trustees has been privileged to have Dr. Tzagournis serve as its Medical Advisor for the past 40 years,” said OP&F Executive Director William J. Estabrook.  “During this time Dr. Tzagournis has shown compassion for disabled police officers and firefighters across the state while maintaining his objectivity and professional integrity. In addition, Dr. Tzagournis has made significant contributions to OP&F’s disability program by providing sound direction and timely recommendations.”

Tzagournis obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree from The Ohio State University in 1960.  Presently Tzagournis is the Vice-President for Health Sciences and Dean, College of Medicine Emeritus, Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at The Ohio State University, and is an attending physician at The Ohio State University Medical Center, the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital, and Intensiva Hospital of Columbus.  Tzagournis has received numerous awards throughout his career including the Earl N. Metz Distinguished Physician Award in 2007 and the Mershon Award in 2006.
